Arkia Israel Airlines announced Monday that it will operate charter line to the Tanzanian destinations of Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, starting next spring.

The decision to expand Arkia’s flights to Tanzania was based on the success of trial flights to Kilimanjaro and the island of Zanzibar during the recent Hanukkah holiday, said a senior executive at the airline.

The executive added that the company plans to double the number of flights to Tanzania, starting from the Passover holiday next April, and then begin charter service to the two destinations.

Arkia has flown 492,000 passengers on international flights from Ben-Gurion International Airport between January and November of this year, according to Israel Airports Authority figures – a 7.8% increase over the same period last year. This made it the third-largest airline in terms of number of passengers flying from Ben-Gurion, after El Al and Turkish Airlines.
