Yaakov Litzman, who is expected to take over the Health Ministry in the next government, has proposed Prof. Zeev Rothstein, the director general of Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, as the next CEO of the financially troubled Hadassah Medical Center, sources told TheMarker.

“It’s an idea that we’re considering right now,” Litzman’s office told TheMarker. Rothstein offered no comment while Hadassah said it was still seeking a candidate via a search committee its board had established as part of the hospital’s recovery program.

Prof. Dror Mevorach, who heads the senior doctors’ committee at Hadassah, said the staff was enthusiastic about the possible appointment.

“We’re pleased that a person of stature such as Prof. Rothstein might lead Hadassah,” he said. “We’ll do everything we can to help the institution get back on track as quickly as possible.”

Litzman, who will formally serve as deputy health minister but with no minister above him, offered Rothstein the job even though he is 65 and due to retire in another two years, the sources said.

Litzman and Rothstein had a very public dispute when Liztman was deputy health minister in the second Netanyahu government, but since then the two have reestablished a cordial relationship.

If he accepts the post, Rothstein will be taking what is perhaps the most challenging job in the Israeli health system. The famed Jerusalem medical center has huge debts, troubled labor relations and has been without a CEO since Avigdor Kaplan stepped down last June after a brief and stormy tenure.

Rothstein, who has headed Sheba for a decade, made it the most efficient government hospital in the country with a balanced budget and a reputation for excellence.
