Israeli-based Waze, developers of the traffic report app, refuted a story published Saturday that had claimed irate residents from the affluent west side of Los Angeles were sending false reports to send unwanted drivers back to the crowded 405 Freeway, LAist reported on Sunday.

"Fake, coordinated traffic reports can't come to fruition because they'll be negated by the next 50 people that drive down the street passively using Waze," a spokeswoman for the app said. Waze also added that their app had a built-in system that was designed to prevent false traffic reports, according to LAist.

The original report had come from celebrity gossip website TMZ, which reported that Westside residents were annoyed that the app was redirecting traffic through their neighborhood. It went so far as to say residents had complained at neighborhood council meetings. However, LAist reported it could find no such minutes to corroborate such discussions.
