The U.K.-based discount airline easyJet is considering adding a service directly between Eilat and destinations in Europe.

The potential Eilat service was discussed at a meeting between Tourism Ministry director general Amir Halevy and easyJet executives at last week’s World Travel Market conference in London. Halevy is known to have also met with officials from Dutch-based carrier Transavia.

The talks were part of a broader effort by Israeli officials to increase international air service to Eilat. The town faces stiff competition from Aqaba, the Jordanian resort city just across the border.

EasyJet has been expanding its service between Europe and Ben-Gurion Airport, and intends to inaugurate a new service between the airport and Paris next year.
