Until now, the paper distributed a daily paper to subscribers. However, it had only a few hundred weekday subscribers and was generating losses. Most of Makor Rishon’s readers subscribe to the weekend edition.
The newspaper caters to a more right-wing, religious readership.
Makor Rishon recently purchased news website NRG, which used to be owned by the tabloid Ma’ariv, and that site is now Makor Rishon’s digital platform. The site is updated regularly.
Makor Rishon stated: “The newspaper intends to focus its efforts on strengthening its flagship product, the weekend edition, and to maintain contact with readers via NRG during the week.”
Adelson also owns Israel Hayom, a free newspaper he launched several years ago. Israel Hayom has been blamed by members of the media and politicians as being partly responsible for the troubles at Ma’ariv, which went bankrupt earlier this year.
