Bereaved Aussie Families Mark 10 Years Since Maccabiah Tragedy

A memorial ceremony marking 10 years since the Maccabiah Bridge disaster that killed four Australian athletes and injured dozens more will take place this morning at the site of the collapse. The ceremony, which will include remarks from Australian ambassador James Larsen as well as representatives of the Maccabi World Union, was organized by a number of local Australian groups. "We've been in contact with the families and felt it was important to commemorate the tragedy here in Israel at the site," said Frank Stein, the Israel office director of the Zionist Federation. A series of commemorative services planned by the Australian Jewish community are slated to take place at synagogues in Melbourne and Sydney this Shabbat. On Sunday, a small ceremony and tree planting will take place at the Jewish community cemetery in Melbourne. Today's local ceremony at the site of the collapse will take place next to the foot bridge over the Yarkon River, behind the Ramat Gan Mall.
