Reports: Teen stabbed in Jerusalem is recent immigrant from U.S.

The 17-year-old Israeli who was lightly wounded in the stabbing near Damascus Gate in Jerusalem is a recent immigrant from the U.S., Army Radio and the Ynet news site report.

According to Ynet, the ultra-Orthodox teen moved to Israel from New York a month and a half ago in order to enlist with the Israel Defense Forces. The teen, who is reportedly studying in a military prep school in Jerusalem, was on his way back from praying at the Western Wall when he was attacked.

The news site reported that the medical staff at the Jerusalem medical center where the teen is hospitalized was waiting until the Sabbath ended in New York to inform his family.

A 16-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem who is suspect in the stabbing has turned himself in after learning the police are on his way to arrest him. Other arrests are expected in the case, the police said.

According to Army Radio, two other youths arrested in connection with the attack have been released.

The 17-year-old Israeli was lightly wounded in the stabbing, but his companion managed to flee back inside Damascus Gate and alert police on the scene.

The assailants fled, but their descriptions were passed along to police who began extensive searches for the suspects.
