‘Old Man With Kids, Leave Them and Come’: With Israel's Soldiers Along Gaza's Escape Route

Surrounded by ruins and the sounds of explosions, hundreds of displaced Palestinians marched Sunday toward southern Gaza. Periodically, the voice of the IDF’s announcer burst through the loudspeaker, asking one of them to step out of the line. IDF soldiers fire into the air when residents don’t obey orders. On Sunday, Salah Al-Din Street, on the outskirts of Gaza City, was full of several hundred refugees fleeing from northern Gaza. The weather was gloomy; sand and dust filled the air and entered the eyes of everybody standing in the long column of people. Some carried white flags, while others just raised their green ID cards.
