An Israeli court convicted a 23-year-old for the killing of a high school student in a Druze village in northern Israel, almost six years after the violent incident occurred.

The Haifa District Court sentenced the man from northern Israel for the murder of Wijdan Abu Hamid, a 17-year-old girl, from the Druze village of Kisra-Sumei in the western Galilee in December 2016. Her body was discovered with stab wounds in a local park around 100 meters from her home.

The assailant's attornet, Zaki Kamel said in response that he respects the judge's decision and that he will examine it before making an appeal.

The indictment filed against the killer in January 2017 was banned from publication, while the trial was also held behind closed doors, due to him being a minor at the time of the act.

According to available information from the indictment, the defendant was waiting for Abu Hamid on her way home from school. "After meeting her, an argument arose between the two, during which the defendant stabbed the minor multiple times, which caused her death, and fled the scene," the prosecution said in a statement issued with the January 2017 indictment.
