About a month ago, Jerusalem saw an extraordinary funeral. In a family plot near the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University, beyond the confines of any cemetery known to the public, the painter, teacher and curator Rachel Shavit was laid to rest. Dozens attended the funeral under the site’s large cypress trees and sang the verses of the Shaul Tchernichovsky poem “I believe.”
