A 51-year-old man was shot dead on Sunday in the northern Israeli Arab town of Arara.

The victim, Ahmad Abu Sheikha, was shot from close range near his home and pronounced dead at the scene. He is the father of five children.

Police believe the killing was part of a longstanding feud between two local families.

"The feud between the families is going on for years," an Arara resident told Haaretz. "Both families live in the same neighborhood. Over the past week, the conflict between them intensified resulting in several shooting incidents from both sides. This is probably what led to the murder today."

Police have opened an investigation into the incident. The identity of the shooter is not yet known.

In 2021, 126 Arabs in Israel were murdered in crime-related violence, according to the NGO Abraham Initiatives. Police solved only 23 percent of these murders, compared with 71 percent of murders in Israel's Jewish community that same year.
