A resident of Israel's central city of Lod was arrested Saturday on suspicion of stabbing his mother to death.

After the stabbing, the 34-year-old arrived at a police station close to his family home and told officers he had murdered his mother.

According to the police, officers who arrived at the apartment found the woman, who is around 60 years old. Her death was determined by medics. Police are investigating whether the man, who lives elsewhere, recently moved in with his mother.

Police are investigating whether the suspect suffers from a mental disorder. Though he is not officially diagnosed with a mental illness, he had been hospitalized in the past, said a police source.

Police believe the court will order a psychiatric evaluation to see if he is fit to stand trial. After his interrogation, the suspect will brought into custody for an extended detention.

In the meantime, Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court has extended his detention until Thursday.
