A 42-year-old resident was shot and killed in Lod on Thursday, hours after a shooting incident in northern Israel claimed the life of a 4-year-old child.

Police said Hussein Issawi has no criminal record, but his family is in of an ongoing dispute with another family in the central Israeli city.

Issawi was evacuated to Shamir Medical Center in critical condition. After resuscitation attempts by medics, he was pronounced dead.

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, but no suspects have been apprehended.

Earlier on Thursday, 4-year-old Ammar Hujayrat was killed in a playground in northern Israel by a stray bullet that hit his neck.

Police suspect the shooting was aimed at a nearby construction site in the Bedouin town of Bir al-Maksur, near Nazareth, as part of an ongoing dispute. Four suspects were detained for their alleged involvement.

Amid a rise in crime related to illegal weapons possession, last month the Knesset passed an emergency order setting a mandatory minimum sentence for possessing, carrying, buying or selling a weapon illegally.

With violent crime in Israel's Arab community steadily rising in recent years, and amid criticism that the police are not doing enough to tackle the problem, law enforcement agencies have launched a campaign targeting 370 figures in the Arab community who are considered sources of criminal activity.
