With a sense of satisfaction, this week the military marked seven months of relative quiet in the Gaza Strip, since the conclusion of Operation Guardian of the Walls – the last, for now, in the series of major Israeli military offensives in Gaza. Like the earlier operations – Cast Lead (2008), Pillar of Defense (2012), Protective Edge (2014), and a series of smaller attacks – the May 2021 operation did not bring about a fundamental change. Once more, Israel and Hamas traded blows, the Palestinians paid a higher price in human losses and in economic damage, and the sides eventually decided to return to the ceasefire.
