The Reason Why Israel Would Use NSO Spyware on Palestinians
Cyberwarfare in the Middle East is all about deniability. Just look at Israel and Iran's shadow war
The Palestinian Authority’s claim, that Israel hacked the mobile phones of senior officials of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Ramallah using the Pegasus spyware, seems strange at first blush. If Pegasus is a sort of “cousin” to spyware developed by Israeli intelligence services, which are capable of more effective results in a more covert manner, why would the Shin Bet – or any other security organization in Israel – need the civilian software, which to top it all off is identified with the NSO cyberfirm? The Israeli firm, after all, is currently under the intense scrutiny of Western countries and human rights organizations, to the extent that any client using the firm’s services risks being tainted.
