A Palestinian protester was shot dead on Friday by Israeli soldiers during clashes near Nablus in the West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. The Palestinian Red Crescent added that 23 others were wounded, 10 of them by live fire.

A few hundred Palestinians had gathered in the village of Beita, in the northern West Bank, to protest Israeli settlements. Some in the crowd, with their faces covered by masks, threw rocks at soldiers and burned tires, witnesses said.

According to reports in Palestinian media, the Israeli soldiers opened fire at the protesters, hitting 28-year-old Zakaria Hamayel in the chest. He was rushed to a local hospital by the Palestinian Red Crescent, where he was pronounced dead.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli army said they were checking the report.

Tensions remain high in the region after a cease-fire reached last week between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza that ended 11 days of fighting.

Demonstrators were protesting a settlement outspost in the Jabal Sabih area near Beita, which was erected after an Israeli man, 19-year-old Yehuda Guetta, died in a shooting attack at the nearby Tapuah Junction in early May.

As Israeli forces were searching for the shooter in the days following the attack, clashes in the village of Odla, also in the same area of the West Bank, led to the death of 16-year-old Palestinian Saeed Oudeh.
