A Palestinian woman who attempted to stab soldiers in the West Bank on Sunday, died hours after being shot and hospitalized.

The alleged assailant was evacuated by Rescuers Without Borders to Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center in a critical condition. Hours earlier, the military said she attempted to stab soldiers at the Gush Etzion junction in the West Bank.

A video of the incident shows IDF soldiers calling on her to drop the knife several times and firing warning shots into the air. As she continued to walk toward them, two bullets were fired at her. She sustained chest and limb injuries.

Palestinian media identified her as Fahima al-Kharub. Her brother told Haaretz that her mental health deteriorated and she had tried to take her own life after she lost her job in a beauty salon as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

She had suffering from depression and anxiety, he said, and she was taken back to mental health facilities on Saturday after she did not take her medication.

The assailant was a 60-year-old woman from Husan, a town near Bethlehem and not far from the settlement of Betar Ilit, according to security sources.

Last week, a Palestinian man was shot and injured after he attempted to stab an Israeli police officer near a West Bank settlement.
