A suspected smuggler near the border with Egypt was killed early Thursday after an IDF soldier shot at the wheels of his vehicle.
A military statement said that the soldiers were on an ambush near the border fence, when they identified three vehicles approaching it from the Israeli side. The soldiers fired at the vehicles after they failed to response to calls to halt, the statement read.
The military believes that the men were attempting to smuggle drugs from Egypt into Israel.
Many Israelis previously arrested for smuggling in the area were from the Bedouin village of Bir Hadaj, located in the northern desert.
