U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday at a White House press briefing that Kuwait may be the next Arab country to establish diplomatic relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords.

Trump told reporters that Kuwait is "so excited that we've signed the first two countries and I think they'll end up fairly quickly being a part of it."

The president's comments came after a meeting with the emir’s eldest son, Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, where he accepted an award on behalf of his father.

In Kuwait, there was widespread support for the Palestinians, and after learning of the agreement with the United Arab Emirates, senior officials claimed that they would be the "last" to join the initiative.

Trump's comments come following normalization of relations between the UAE, Bahrain and Israel which took place on Tuesday, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inked agreements between Israel and the two Gulf states at the White House.

Speaking after U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the signing, Netanyahu repeated the president’s claim that he is "lining up more and more countries" to sign peace agreements with Israel.

"This peace will eventually expand to include other Arab states, and ultimately it can end the Arab-Israeli conflict once and for all," Netanyahu added.

During the Emir's visit to the White House, Trump awarded Kuwait's leader the U.S. Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander at a private ceremony. It was the first time the honor has been given since 1991, the White House said in a statement.

The 91-year-old emir arrived in the United States in July to complete medical treatment, the Kuwaiti state news agency said at the time, adding that he was in stable condition after having undergone successful surgery in July.
