A 45-year-old man drowned to death in an artificial lake near Zikim Beach on Friday after saving four people in distress.

The man, Michael Ben Zikri of Ashdod, responded to a call for help over fears that a a woman and three children, all residents of Hura, were at risk of drowning. All four are in good condition.

A Magen David Adom paramedic recounted that as they were caring for the four rescued people, civilians pointed out that the man who had plucked them out of the water had never gotten out himself. A large contingent of rescue crew launched searches and Ben Zikri was eventually pulled from the water unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene. Some Ashdod residents expressed anger at how warning signs against swimming in the dangerous lake were often ignored.

Earlier, a 16-year-old boy drowned in a pit near the settlement of Kedumim. The child, identified as Boaz Azoulay, had gone to swim with two friends, who were rescued.

Elsewhere, a boy of four was in serious condition after nearly drowning in the Dead Sea. He was partly conscious when paramedics arrived and was later sedated and reported in stable condition.
