Israeli forces shot and wounded early morning Wednesday a man who crossed the border from Jordan in northern Israel. The army and the police's Border Defense Unit said he is suspected of smuggling weapons into the country.

The man, shot near Gesher, a kibbutz south of the Sea of Galilee, is said to be in moderate condition. He was taken to Poriya Hospital in Tiberias for treatment.

According to the Israel Police, he was carrying a bag containing nine handguns and six rifles, worth about 500,000 shekel (about $143,000), and additional weapons.

The Israeli army said forces identified two suspects, but one of them fled back to Jordan.

The army said that flash grenades were thrown during the course of the incident, causing a fire, which have since been brought under control.
