The Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer in the central Israeli city of Ramat Gan has been ranked as one of the top ten hospitals in the world by the U.S. magazine Newsweek for the second year running.

It climbed from the tenth to the ninth spot on the list alongside global leaders, most of them based in the United States. The top three spots went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

The ranking is based on data collected by the magazine and a panel made up of doctors, medical professionals, and statisticians from four continents, with the complete list including 1,000 hospitals.

Newsweek emphasized the diversity of fields covered by Sheba, including general and acute care, as well as specific work with women and children. It also stressed the role of the medical center's different divisions, including its rehabilitation hospital, and special clinics for eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders in soldiers.

Groundbreaking research in the areas of cardiology, cancer, brain, obstetrics and gynecology, genetics and medical education also contributed to the hospital's standing.

"The selection reflects another year of advanced and excellent medicine, groundbreaking research and world-leading innovation," said Prof. Yitzhak Kreis, director of the institution. "As with any situation, and especially nowadays when we are leading the national effort to treat coronavirus, it is a privilege to give the people of Israel the best medicine in the world."

Sheba is currently treating Israelis that have contracted the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 abroad, and since last week, in Israel. A special quarantined department was set up prior to the arrival of a dozen Israelis from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, one of the major hotbeds for the virus outside mainland China.
