A one-year-old girl was killed early Wednesday in a fire that had broken out at her family's residence in the southern Negev community of Segev Shalom, located southeast of Be’er Sheva.

Fire and emergency rescue services that arrived at the scene took 13 other people, including eight children, to Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva, for smoke inhalation. The hospital reported that they were all in good condition and were treated and released.

The fire department has opened an investigation into the cause of the blaze. Magen David Adom senior medic Yasser Abu Ragila reported that when he arrived, the infant was unconscious, having suffered severe burns. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Ten members of the family who were rescued were fully conscious suffering from smoke inhalation and some were also in shock,” the medic added.

In a separate incident in Ashdod, a 57-year-old man suffered moderate to severe burns in a gas explosion at a residential building. Five other people were lightly injured from smoke inhalation and bruises. Fire fighters dismantled two natural gas canisters at an apartment on the ground floor.
