Palestinian militant factions in Gaza fired dozens of rockets at Israel's south and center on Tuesday following the overnight assassination of a high-ranking Islamic Jihad militant by Israel.

One of the rockets fired from Gaza hit an intersection on Route 4, near the town of Gan Yanve, south of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. A traffic camera video shows how the rocket narrowly misses Israeli vehicles.

The targeted senior Islamic Jihad official was Baha Abu al-Ata. Ata headed the military council of the Al-Quds Brigade, the military arm of the Islamic Jihad. He commanded the organization's operations in northern Gaza, but also weilded great influence on the southern front. Ata's wife was also killed in the strike.

Also Tuesday, Islamic Jihad said that Israel targeted the house of one of its officials in the Syrian capital on Tuesday, killing one of his sons.

Syrian state media earlier reported that at least two people were killed and six wounded in an attack in the early hours that targeted a building in Damascus, without saying who had been targeted or who had carried out the attack.
