Germany Stresses Support for Two-state Solution Ahead of Bahrain Conference

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas committed himself on Sunday to the two-state solution to solve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians as the international community waits for the U.S. peace plan for the Middle East to be unveiled.

After a meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Amman on Sunday, Maas said: "We are and we remain united in the need for a negotiated two-state solution." This solution envisages the creation of a Palestinian state independent of Israel.

At the same time, he pledged further support to the United Nations Palestine Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) boycotted by Washington.

The work of this relief agency continued to be of great importance in the future, therefore Germany would not end its support, Maas said.

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. withdrew from funding UNWRA. Washington argues that economic investments are better suited than donations to improve the lives of Palestinians.

Trump's advisor and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will soon present a peace plan for the deadlocked conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

There indications that the plan's promises of financials gains are intended to persuade the Palestinians to give up on the demand for a state of their own, according to U.S. media.

The small Gulf state of Bahrain is to host an investment conference on the Palestinian territories June 25 and 26.

The Palestinians reject the event because they are not prepared to make political concessions to gain material improvements.
