EU Slams Israel for Advancing West Bank Settlement Construction: 'Illegal Under International Law'

The European Union strongly condemned Israel Thursday for advancing construction in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
"The EU is strongly opposed to Israel's settlement policy which is illegal under international law and an obstacle to peace," the EU spokesperson's office wrote in a statement.

On Wednesday, Israel's Civil Administration approved the construction of 384 new housing units in the West Bank, some in relatively isolated settlements. The Administration also discussed construction plans for several hundred more homes, which still require further permissions from the Higher Planning Council.
In the statement, the EU said it "will continue to engage with both parties and with its international and regional partners to support a resumption of a meaningful process towards a negotiated two-state solution, the only realistic and viable way to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of both parties."
