U.S President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, visited the Gaza Strip Sunday with Major General Yoav Mordechai, Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories. The general told Greenblatt that "the difficult situation in the Gaza Strip is a result of the policy led by Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.

"The difficult situation in the Gaza Strip is a result of the policy of the terrorist organization Hamas, which instead of investing in the population, invests in tunnels of death and weapons, and the policy of the Palestinian Authority, which does not invest enough in the Gaza Strip. I hope that the international community and the Palestinians understand this."

Greenblatt later posted a photo of him visiting a Hamas tunnel and tweeted: "Hamas wastes resources on tunnels & rockets to attack Israel, instead of helping the people of Gaza by getting the lights on, the water flowing & the economy growing. Hamas spews hateful rhetoric & foments a vicious cycle of violence. Gaza deserves better!"

Since the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Arab leaders have rejected the move, claiming U.S. can no longer mediate peace betwen Israel and Palestinians. Greenblatt and Jared Kushner are Trump's special envoys to the peace process.
