Israel Shoots Back at Syria After Tank Shell Strikes in Golan Heights

Israel fired back at a Syrian-government target on Wednesday after a tank shell fired struck inside the Golan Heights.

There were no casualties or damage in the incident. The Israeli army said the shell was most likely spillover from fighting raging in Syria.

The IDF said a tank shell struck in an open area in the northern Golan Heights, and that in response to the spillover from Syria, the IDF attacked a government target in the northern part of the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, and identified a hit.

The shell fired from Syria was believed to be spillover from the Syrian civil war, but the IDF has said it would not tolerate any attempt to violate Israeli sovereignty or compromise its security, and sees the Syrian government as responsible for what goes on inside its territory.

In November, a number of ISIS militants were killed after exchanging fire with Israeli soldiers in the Golan, in the first direct clashes between Israel and the Islamic State group.

Several mortar shells exploded following a brief exchange with the Israeli infantry soldiers before an Israeli aircraft bombed a vehicle armed with a heavy machine gun.

Hours later a second round of Israeli airstrikes targeted a facility controlled by ISIS fighters in the Syrian Golan Heights, according to the IDF spokesperson's unit.
