A Jewish woman, who was sexually assaulted in 2008 by Palestinians in Jerusalem, will be recognized as a victim of a politically motivated crime. The head of the police’s investigations and intelligence department, Maj. Gen. Meni Yitzhaki, examined the case and determined that the victim was attacked because she was Jewish, making the crime a politically motivated one.

According to a Defense Ministry announcement, the victim, who was a 25-year-old student at the time, was attacked by a group of Palestinian minors near the Old City, in the middle of the day. The assailants held her by force, robbed her and committed indecent acts on her while bruising her and breaking her nose.

The law regulating compensation for injuries defines politically motivated acts as violent acts mainly designed to harm someone due to his or her national or ethnic origins, when these acts result from the Israeli-Arab conflict. The law applies to anyone deemed to have been the subject of such an attack.

In 2015 the Defense Ministry announced that it was recognizing a rape case in a Tel Aviv municipal park in 2012 as a politically motivated assault. The rape victim was awarded compensation based on the same law. In that case a couple was walking to a parking lot, close to city hall, at 4 in the morning and noticed a man following them. The man, a 21- year-old Palestinian named Ahmed Bani-Jaber from the West Bank village of Aqraba, pulled out a knife and forced the man to have sex with the woman. After that he raped the woman in the parking lot’s public bathroom, all the while threatening the man. After two hours he fled the scene.
