A 20-year-old Palestinian from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Baher, Abed Dawiat, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Monday following his manslaughter conviction in a plea agreement in connection with the death of Alex Levlovich, who was killed in Jerusalem on the evening of Rosh Hashanah in 2015 when his car was pelted with stones.

He had been on his way home with family members from a Rosh Hashanah dinner, when his car was attacked. He then lost control of the vehicle.

Dawiat was allegedly one of five defendants who threw the stones. In addition to the jail term, he was ordered to pay Levlovich's children 100,000 shekels ($26,300) in compensation.

The judge in the case, Raphael Carmel, ruled that Dawiat had thrown a stone weighing about a kilogram (2.2 pounds) that went through the driver's side window and caused Levlovich to lose control of the car, which hit a utility pole followed by a tree and then came to a stop. "Even before the deceased began the new year, he had already concluded it," Carmel noted in his sentencing order.

The incident was the first in a wave of attacks against Jews in the city that broke out in the fall of 2015.
