A Palestinian stabbed and lightly wounded a police officer in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City on Wednesday before being shot and seriously wounded. The assailant, a resident of the West Bank, later succumbed to his wounds.

A 14-year-old boy was also lightly wounded in the incident.

According to the police, the assailant approached a number of police officers and stabbed one of them, a man in his 40s, several times in the head at which point he was shot.

First responders said the teen wounded in the incident, a resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, suffered head trauma and claimed he was attacked as well, though it is unclear how he was wounded.

According to Palestinian reports the assailant is Khamad Khadr Ashikh, 21, from Beit Surik, north-west of Jerusalem.

Israel Police have since closed all entrances to the Muslim Quarter and most of the shops on Hagai St.

The last stabbing attack in Jerusalem took place in November, when a 16-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli security forces at a roadblock in East Jerusalem after he allegedly tried to stab one of them.

According to the police, security forces were checking passengers on a minibus that arrived from the Shoafat refugee camp when the teen drew a knife from under his shirt and tried to stab an officer. The teen, Mohammed Nabil, was a resident of Shoafat.

Earlier the same week, a Palestinian from the West Bank was shot dead after trying to stab a security guard at Qalandiya checkpoint. According to Palestinian sources, the suspected assailant was Jihad Mohammed Khalil, 48, from the village Beit Wazan near Nablus.
