Israel Air Force struck Syrian military artillery late on Tuesday after three projectiles earlier hit the central Israeli Golan Heights in an apparent spillover from the fighting across the border.

"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel's sovereignty and the security of its residents. The IDF sees the Syrian regime as responsible for what takes place in its territory, and will not hesitate to act against other resistance elements in Syria," the Israeli military said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, three shells hit Israeli territory, causing no damage or injuries. The Israel Defense Forces stopped traffic in the central Golan Heights on Route 98, between Alonei Habashan and the Baron Junction, in response to the shelling.

The projectile hit the Golan hours after the Syrian army fired two surface-to-air missiles at Israeli aircraft, as Israel attacked Syrian regime targets in response to mortar shells fired at Israel on Monday.

Israel denies a Syrian military claim that it has downed two Israeli aircraft over the Golan Heights in the incident overnight. "The IAF jets were far from the source of the fire and didn't pose any danger to our forces," the military said.

This is the fifth time Israel has struck Syrian military targets in the past two weeks after mortars fired from Syria have hit the Golan.

Tuesday's incidents were the first spillover since a cease-fire in Syria brokered by the United States and Russia went into effect on Monday evening, in a second attempt this year by Washington and Moscow to halt the five-year-old civil war.
