Police declined to enter or search an apartment in central Israel after being informed by the parents of a 13-year-old girl that she was in the apartment with three men who they suspected of sexually assaulting her, according to a complaint filed by the parents.

Alerted by the parents, police officers arrived at the apartment, but did not go inside to search. Nor did they agree to call her on her cell phone to inquire if she was inside, according to the complaint.

The girl subsequently left the apartment, called her parents and was taken to hospital for a rape test. She told police that she had had consensual sex with three men. Such sex is considered statutory rape, given the girl’s age.

The men were arrested and the remand of two of them was extended on Tuesday by six days. The two did not deny having sexual relations with the girl but said they thought she was 17-years-old.

The girl was apparently being held inside a closet in the apartment while the police were outside, along with a 23-year-old man who is believed to have raped her earlier.

The parents, who had arrived at the apartment before the police, said that the door of the apartment had been opened by a man, who claimed that he was in the apartment alone. The police told the parents to submit a police complaint if their daughter didn’t contact them within a few hours.

The Israel Police stated in response that when they responded to the call at the apartment, the girl’s father told the officers that she and the suspect were not there. While the mother was submitting her police complaint, she received a message from her daughter saying she was at the apartment, at which point an officer returned to the scene and found her outside the door.
