With an exceptional line-up of speakers including Tzipi Livni MK, Stav ShaffirMK, Rt Hon. Sajid Javid MP, a senior Israeli diplomat and many others from across the political spectrum, Haaretz newspaper’s first ever conference in London will address the most pressing issues facing Israel and the Jewish people.

Dear friends,

I’m pleased to send my warm wishes to you all in London. It is a time of disagreement in the UK as there has been a great debate about the future of the country. Across Europe, arguments about economic and security challenges and on the other side of the Atlantic the heated [presidential] campaigns. In Israel, Israelis argue and debate every question about our lives here—in the media, in the university, in the Knesset and in the market—every day and everywhere. In that debate Haaretz is a leading voice. I [have been] a reader of Haaretz for seventy years now. At first, I read, of course, Haaretz for children. Later I became a reader of the daily newspaper. All these years I’ve read Haaretz to learn what people who don’t share my opinion think. Haaretz is a newspaper with a specific agenda, but it also gives a voice to many others [with] different opinions. From its first day, Haaretz has provided an important voice on the central question of Zionism. That is why, for me, Haaretz carries great value. There will always be Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai; there will always be a right and a left. But what matters is that we can argue and disagree with respect and understanding. I’m sure that today in London you will continue to debate and discuss some of the most important issues and challenges you face. I also know you are paying tribute to the memory of a very special man, former editor [at] Haaretz, David Landau. God bless his soul. David was a giant in Israeli journalism. He was dedicated to holding a mirror up to our society and it is fitting to remember him at your conference today. I wish you all a meaningful and interesting conference.

Shalom to all of you from Jerusalem. God bless.
