Israeli authorities returned the body of the Palestinian teenager who was killed after carrying out a stabbing attack at a central outdoor market in Jerusalem last month.

According to the army, the transfer of 14-year-old Hadil Awad's body took place after the military recived final confirmation from Israel's political leadership. Palestinian sources confirmed that the body of the teenager was returned to her family, who lives in Qalandiyah in the West Bank, and was then taken for burial.

Israel conditioned the release of her body on the promise that no massive funeral would be held, fearing that such an event would deteriorate into riots. Previously, when Israel returned the body parts of Palestinians killed during alleged terror attacks to their families in Hebron, large events were held, in what security sources described as a deviation from agreements reached with the Palestinian Authority.

According to Palestinian sources, Israel is still holding the bodies of six Palestinian youths. So far, Israel has transferred the bodies of nine attackers to the Palestinian Authority.

Policeman questioned

The attack took place on November 23 in the Mahane Yehuda market. Two female teens aged 14 and 16 wielding scissors stabbed an elderly Palestinian man they apparently mistook for a Jew. They were then shot by a police officer. The 14-year-old, identified as Hadil Awad, died at the scene. The 16-year-old was seriously wounded and evacuated to the hospital.

The policeman has been questioned by the Justice Ministry's department for the investigation of police officers, due to complaints that he shot Awad although she posed no danger. The policeman countered that he shot the girl because he believed the danger had not yet passed.

The 16-year-old assailant, a resident of Kafr 'Aqab, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon.

According to the indictment, Awad told her some three weeks ago that she wanted to attack Jews in revenge for the death of her brother who suffered a head injury during violent clashes with Israeli security forces in 2013 and died of his wounds a year later.

The teens were said to have left their homes the next day with school bags on their shoulders and traveled into town by bus, where they prayed at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount before buying two pairs of scissors to use in their attack.

According to the charge sheet, at around 11 A.M. the relative stabbed a 70-year-old man sitting on a bench in his neck and back. The wounded man fled the scene. The 14-year-old then tried to stab another person, while the accused threatened passersby with her scissors. The victim the accomplice chose, however, had a pistol and shot her. It was then that the policeman arrived at the scene and shot both girls.
