Until the campaign, which Peretz says will take place in two years, he will continue to support Herzog against Netanyahu's coalition.

Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz confirmed Thursday that he will take on Isaac Herzog as Labor leader in two years' time.

Peretz, a current member of Knesset for Zionist Union, confirmed that he will run while addressing students at Sapir College in southern Israel, Channel 10 reported.

"I see myself as someone who could [win]," Peretz said. "I already served in this position."

Peretz led the Labor party between 2005 and 2007, but left it in 2012 to join Tzipi Livni's Hatnua party. In 2012-2013, the former mayor of Sderot served as Minister of Environmental Protection. When Hatnua and Labor merged before the March 2015 election, Peretz reentered Knesset representing the Zionist Union party.

Until he runs, Peretz explained that he will continue to support Herzog against Netanyahu's coalition.

"Herzog is leading a complex opposition, perhaps the most complex we've ever had," Peretz explained, adding that "the question of [Labor] leadership is less important, but it is important the public feels there is a real ideological alternative on defense, economic and social issues."
