Rafi Nelson became a legend in his lifetime. The man who fought, was wounded and lost his eye in the 1948 War of Independence became one of Israel’s most famous bohemians. He nurtured the myth surrounding him, creating a persona that was a cross between a pirate – with a heavy beard and eyepatch – and a drunken cowboy, always with a beer in hand.
