The inner circle of leadership in Israel revolves around one man and most of its members are interchangeable; their proximity to the Sun-King Benjamin Netanyahu is determined by their fluctuating levels of sycophancy and fleeting political usefulness. Few have achieved an independent standing of their own, let alone anything coming close to permanency in their orbit. In recent years however, two men have stood out and earned Netanyahu’s implicit trust, or whatever comes closest to that from the perennially paranoid prime minister.
