On October 21, unmanned suicide vehicles attacked the American base at al-Tanf in eastern Syria. The attack, which has been attributed to Iran, did not cause casualties because a friendly country had warned the Americans in advance, and they managed to move the soldiers to shelter. The Iranian attack was interpreted as a response to a heavy airborne attack that had taken place several days earlier against Shi’ite militias in Syria. Apparently, the Iranians were not certain whether Israel or America had been behind that bombardment but in the end they chose an American target for their response. In the days following the attack at al-Tanf, there were statements heard in Iran to the effect that henceforth America will pay for its support of Israel’s deeds.
