Is “the sick man of Europe,” as the Ottoman Empire was described in the 19th century, showing new signs of sickness?

The abject abduction and arrest of a couple of Israeli tourists for alleged espionage; the precipitous fall of the Turkish lira; mounting debts; the expulsion of 10 ambassadors from Ankara (and the swift reversal of that decision); the ongoing refusal to negotiate a compromise with the United States over the acquisition of Russia’s S-400 air defense system; and several video clips showing a frail President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – all indicate that Turkey may be on the verge of political turbulence.
