Terrorist attacks on or near the Temple Mount have a dangerous tendency to ignite a larger conflagration – in Jerusalem, the West Bank and sometimes within the 1967 Green Line.

Sunday’s fatal shooting of a Jewish worshipper and the wounding of four other Israelis not far from the entrance to the Western Wall on Sunday morning by a Hamas activist from Jerusalem’s Shoafat refugee camp could lead to something similar. The police have beefed up their forces in the Old City of Jerusalem and the army is refining the preparedness of its units in the West Bank, in the hope that there won’t be another conflagration this time.
