Until Monday, defense officials thought Hamas had no intention of entering into another round of fighting with Israel. Senior defense officials may have said in a closed forum on Sunday that they were afraid of the implications of Jews going up on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City and the flag march in Jerusalem for Jerusalem Day, but they felt the organization’s threat to fire rockets at Israel were intended for Palestinian ears in the Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
