On the Brink of War: Hamas Surprised Israel and Will Probably Pay the Price

Tuesday’s events – rocket barrages unprecedented in scope at the greater Tel Aviv area, broad air strikes on the Gaza Strip – are bringing Israel and Hamas to the brink of another war. The residents of central Israel never experienced anything like that, though it was all too familiar to Israelis in the south and north: a whole hour of nonstop sirens, interceptions and rockets landing. Pressure on Israel’s government to respond harshly is likely to be enormous.
