The campaign to elect Israel’s next president will officially commence next week and may become a major issue in the negotiations currently underway for a new coalition government, following Israel's fourth Knesset election in two years.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may present his own candidate for the post in an attempt to evade his corruption trial, conviction or punshiment, a number of political sources estimate. The public is quite unaware of these efforts, “but it is a big deal,” someone behind the scenes of the developing race told Haaretz.
