Less than a month ago, an atmosphere of gloom pervaded the Muqata, the Palestinian Authority headquarters in Ramallah. The public had been looking forward to the long-awaited Palestinian parliamentary election. Large numbers of people had been registering to vote, seeing the election as an opportunity to bring about change. But their hopes were dashed when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced April 30 the vote was being postponed.
