From the Moment COVID-19 Struck the Jewish World, It Exposed Painful New Divisions

Only a handful of airline flights are landing at Ben-Gurion Airport these days. But this week, as each of them disgorged their load, a bevy of media crews were waiting outside Arrivals to capture the passengers on camera as they emerged. 

Their motives differed, depending on the orientation of the media outlet they belonged to. Mainstream and left-leaning news organizations were eager to prove reports that the government’s “exemptions committee” had been allowing mainly ultra-Orthodox Jews to arrive under the foreign travel ban, while the Netanyahu-supporting and religious media were hoping to disprove those reports and brand the mainstream media as chronically “anti-Haredi” by proving that most arrivals were secular.
