The Shin Bet security service distributed a poster in an East Jerusalem village last week calling on parents to prevent their children from carrying out terrorist attacks and to stop them watching Hamas’ TV channel.
The poster was placed in the Sur Baher neighborhood, which is home to about 15,000 Palestinians. Residents said police officers displayed the poster in a number of central locations.
The poster, which was signed by the local Shin Bet coordinator, opens with a quote from the Koran: “Soon will the wrongdoers know the end that they shall reach.” (Sura 26:227)
It then tells the parents of young children that they bear great responsibility, given the current climate. The poster says the area has suffered from violent incitement led by Hamas, which it accused of brainwashing the children and inciting them to carry out terrorist acts which led to suicide and death, or to long terms in prison. It specifically mentions a local youth who was sentenced to 10 months in jail for incitement on social networking sites.
The poster calls on parents to keep track of their children’s activities and behavior, and to check their Facebook profiles and the content they are exposed to. It also tells them to prevent youngsters from watching Al-Aqsa TV (the Hamas-run television channel) and similar programs “that brainwash the children of the next generation.”
The poster also opts for flowery language to describe some residents’ actions. “It turns out there are young people in the village who contact one another like bats in the night, operating only under cover of darkness, spreading poison and sowing civil war and hatred in order to harm the stability and tranquillity of the village,” it states.
Shin Bet coordinators and police intelligence officers in Jerusalem occasionally use notices in order to pass on messages to residents. Usually, however, these posters are quickly torn down by locals.
