The border policemen employed riot control gear to disperse the stone-throwers. There were no reports of casualties on either side. The Border Police said they arrested one person and expect to arrest others in the near future.
A video clip documenting the incident was posted Saturday on Palestinian social media networks. It shows the police jeep stopping for about half a minute at a gas station in town. As soon as the engine was turned off, Palestinians approached and began pelting the jeep with stones. They fled after one of the policemen fired a riot-control weapon.
MK Oren Hazan (Likud) said on Saturday that “every one of the terrorists who attacked the IDF jeep with the soldiers inside should have got a live bullet in the head! Of course, that isn’t what happened in reality ... and between us, how could it happen if the soldier who gave the terrorist in Hebron the bullet he deserved is about to enter jail?!”
Hazan was referring to soldier Elor Azaria, who was convicted of manslaughter for killing a Palestinian who had stabbed a fellow soldier when the Palestinian, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, was already lying on the ground wounded. Azaria was sentenced last month to 18 months in prison.
