A 43-year-old Palestinian detainee from East Jerusalem was found dead on Wednesday in a cell in an Israeli prison in his city.

The circumstances of Abd Yusuf al-Khatib al-Tamimi's death remain unclear, and his family demanded the presence of a Palestinian doctor at the time of the autopsy.

The Israel Prison Service said al-Tamimi was found unconscious in his cell, where authorities unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him.

In a statement, the family rejected the version of events offered by the prison service, which suggested al-Tamimi suffered from preexisting medical conditions that could have explained his death.

The family added, based on testimonies from other prisoners, that al-Tamimi was attacked or was under physical or mental pressure.

The prison service said it would look into the incident.

Al-Tamimi was arrested for driving offenses. This was his ninth arrest, the prison service said.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.
