Israel Police arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of murdering his 76-year-old mother Thursday morning, opening its investigation after the suspect called the police's 100 hotline at around 4:30 A.M. to say that he had murdered his mother, the unit's statement said.

Magen David Adom ambulance workers pronounced the suspect's mother dead on the scene, and the suspect, a resident of the northern city of Nahariya, was taken in for questioning at the police station.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect stabbed his mother to death while she was sleeping, the police said.

Including Thursday morning's incident, three women were killed by members of their family since the beginning of 2021. In 2020, 16 women were murdered by a family member.

On Sunday, the Magistrate's Court in Rishon Lezion extended the detention of police officer Amir Raz, who is suspected of having murdered his wife Diana Raz earlier this monthat their home in the West Bank settlement of Na'aleh, while their four children were at home.

During his last interrogation, Amir Raz claimed that he acted in self-defense, after initially having claimed that he had no explanation for his actions and that he did not understand why he had acted as he had.

The investigation is ongoing.
